Better bookmarking

I've just discovered a new way to bookmark my favouite pages. By using web based social bookmarking such as 'delicious', I can now access my 'favs' from anywhere in the world and on any computer. Up until now, I have only been able to access them from my home computer. This could certainly be an advantage particularly when I am at work or travelling the world. Not only that but because it is 'social' I can access sites tagged by others as well which will save me time searching the net.

I have set up the following account:

News my way

RSS feeds was an exciting discovery for me. I have often seen reference to it on the sites that I visit but up until now did not know what it was really referring to.

I feel using RSS feeds will be a good way for me to keep informed in the areas that interest me without having to laboriously sift through a mountain of information for me to find what I am looking for.

I lack the time to read the newspaper or watch the news on TV so subscribing to sites such as the Courier Mail, the Opal Blog, First Tuesday Book Club, Simply Recipes etc will help me zero in on what matters to me.

I can see myself accessing Bloglines on a regular basis.

Socially networking

I am currently using a social networking site called Facebook and I have found that it has connected to me to not only current friends of mine but also past people I have associated with e.g. school friends etc.

It has been a great way to stay in touch with people and be part of their lives.

I think social networking sites could be a very useful tool for libraries to use as it could reach out to people that would not necessarily access library information in other formats.

Libraries could use tools such as Facebook to promote coming events and in this way would connect to a wider audience particularly young people. They could post their newsletters and reach a whole new audience.

Wiki's just a word

Just finished test drive no. 3 and was all worried about wikis but the videos helped explain them to me. I'm a visual learner so the more that is demonstrated, the better. A wiki looks like a good way to communicate with a group so that all members of the group are on the same page, so to speak, at the same time.

I now know that if I have a passion about something, that I may be able to share my ideas with others with the same bent. I think teachers could really use this technology within their classrooms. For example, children could read and edit other students' work and give feedback etc. Mmm, wish wikis had been around when I was teaching!

There would be many benefits to using wikis within the library also and I enjoyed visiting the sites suggested.

The Lost City of Petra

Chose this picture from all the pictures on Flickr. Great site for finding that perfect pickie.

This was the most amazing jaw dropping sight in Jordan. As you near the exit of the Siq you catch your first glimpse of Petra's Lost City radiantly lit up by the sun. Finally you walk out and see it in all its splendour.

The thrill of blogging

This is a new step in the learning process of blogging for me. I believe in life long learning as it opens your mind to so many new possibilities.

It is good to know that I will not be left behind in the world of technology and I will be able to keep up with my children - who knows, maybe even surpass them.
Thank goodness Linda is so patient with me in the learning process. I am looking forward to the next step in this process as I am sure I will start to feel more comfortable with the whole 'blogging thing'.
